Reflections
A project about light reflections and transparency in textile surfaces for rooms in modern architecture.
This project concerns the tactile nature of textiles in the type of modern architecture that often incorporates large sections of glass. Specifically I am focusing on the new university library in Malmö, Sweden , called Orkanen. By retaining the captivating elements of reflections and transparencies, that are visible on the outside glass walls, I aim to extend the sense of movement which is present on the outside to the inside surfaces. Many interior rooms in Orkanen are flooded with light rays that enter via the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, however these inside surfaces do not have the same ambient fluctuations or playfulness as the facade.
Certain materials in textiles have the dual qualities of reflectivity and transparency at the same time. I have worked extensively with weaving and that has given me the opportunities to explore the constructions that produce various surfaces and different shapes. Some more flat, some more structured, all depending on which material that is woven into the loom and the way in which the fabric is pieced together.
From these different surfaces I have selected the ones with the transparency, reflections, colours and structures that suits one specific room in Orkanen.
This project is a work made especially for one particular room in the new university library, and this project’s composition emerges from that building’s attributes.
The textile is composed of three parts that will cover the wall. Taking inspiration from the building’s exterior, the textile is built up in a way that mirrors the movement in the facade and simultaneously becomes a part of the interplay between the white wall, the glass wall and the vista.
